We are mere weeks away from the end of 2018, and usually around this time is a new season of Netflix’s hit series, Stranger Things. Scientists at Harvard University have created a soft, tube-like robot with silicone rubber acting as its artificial skin. The laser-cut rubber used is a thin, stretchable plastic sheet, with the cuts, shaped like triangles or circles, look similar to the scales on the skin of snakes. The robot is able to move as air is pumped into the tube, which allows the robot to expand and contract, resulting in the scales to pop up and anchor against the ground, pulling the robot in a forward motion. Last week, Nintendo unveiled its “new interactive experience” for Nintendo Switch, called Nintendo Labo. Nintendo describes the Labo as a “new line of interactive build-and-play experiences that combine DIY creations with the magic of Nintendo Switch.” The Labo will allow Switch owners build cardboard versions of items — dubbed “Toy-Cons” by Nintendo — ranging from a 13-key piano, to a fishing rod, a bird house or even a motorbike. It works by inserting Joy-Con controllers into those Toy-Cons, and (via the Joy-Con’s use of multiple IR and motion sensors), players will be able to play games themed to the variety of cardboard creations. I must say, as someone who grew up making tons and TONS of things and projects out of cardboard, I’m extremely interested and intrigued by this product.

Okay; this past weekend at Paradise City Comic Con (in Miami, FL), WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley saved two people cosplaying as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters Casey Jones and April O’Neil from being attacked by someone cosplaying as The Walking Dead‘s Negan by performing his Mandible Claw submission hold on him during a cosplay wrestling event. With the influx of cloned retro systems (standard-sized and micro-sized), this has become a great way to experience — for the first time ever or in a while — older games on newer hardware. Via a report from Gizmodo, Hyperkin, the makers of the Retron 5, unveiled their clone system to the popular Nintendo Game Boy, temporarily called the “Ultra Game Boy”; that will DEFINITELY be renamed for trademark and copyright reasons (because DUH). However, that codename is a great description of Hyperkin’s hardware, which aims to improve on Nintendo’s original Game Boy in many ways that won’t impede on the system’s classic gameplay. One week ago, Los Angeles-based Bar Wrestling held its final show of the year. This promotion’s shows are so well-received and in such high-demand that many shows are standing -room only. They’re kinda of like CHIKARA and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), as Bar Wrestling puts on a fun show filled with some of Southern California’s best wrestling talent (here’s some of their DVDs/Blu-rays from Highspots). On their last show for 2017, Joey Ryan dressed up as sexy Santa Claus and teamed up with Candace LeRay (dressed as an elf) and Dick Justice (as a “Supercop Santa”) against “Professional” Peter Avalon, Ray Rosas and (Horn)Swoggle.
