Arcade1Up strikes again with another excellent addition to their line-up of 75%-scale arcade units for those of use who: 1) have great memories of going to and playing games at arcades, 2) want an arcade cabinet — or “cab”, if you’re nasty — at home that wont take up too much space and require little upkeep and 3) want to relive those cruising’ across the … Continue reading Presenting Arcade1Up’s Outrun Arcade Cabinet!

Sonic Fan (and sometimes Director) John Carpenter on His Love for the Game Series

John Carpenter has directed and/or produced some of my favorite films (from Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York, The Fog, They Live, Big Trouble in Little China, to name a few), and I put him on my list of my favorite filmmakers of all time. The only thing that could make me idolize this man and his work more was if he were a fan of my favorite video game series…oh…huh…hold on…JOHN CARPENTER IS A SONIC THE HEDGEHOG FAN!?!?!?! ***jumping up-and-down, squealing*** Whew, ok, so, after telling The Guardian last month about how deep he was into Destiny 2, saying “I’ve dedicated my life to learning how to play it. At my age (69 years old) why not? It keeps me out of trouble.” Recently in FACT, he discusses his long-time love for SEGA’s blue-and-spiked-haired dude with an attitude. Hyperkin’s Game Gear/Master System/Master System Card Adapter for the Retron 5 to be released February 28th!

I love my Retron 5. At its core, the Hyperkin-made system is able to play video game cartridges for the NES, SNES, Genesis, Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. Essentially, the Retron 5 plays an emulated ROM dumped from the original cartridge on a HD television via HD-friendly visual filters to select from. PLUS, you can save your game, take screenshots and add language translations for imports as patches! SCORE. But it seems Hyperkin isn’t settling with the Retron 5 being a 9-in-one system (or 10 if you have a Master System converter of some type), as this next announcement instantly caught my attention. Sony has released a PlayStation VR Music Video that you can walk around in…

I have been a proud owner of the PlayStation VR hardware since its launch last year, and for the past several months I’ve enjoyed playing VR-based games and demos, while also having a fun time playing non-VR games in theater mode.  VR, in general, is successful when the visuals and audio become optimally immersive, but most of the focus had been on visuals.  To show how capable PSVR can be by having the audio and other sounds adapt to your movement in the virtual space, Sony brought in violinist Joshua Bell to record a 360-degree virtual reality studio session at Air Studios’ Lyndhurst Hall in London. This project, which features adaptive audio and positional tracking, allows the subject wearing the PSVR helmet to semi-realistically “step inside” the recording studio.

Netflix made a Free Video Game Featuring Some of its Hit Shows…

Apparently Netflix can’t stand to limit themselves to only commissioning award-winning programming and movies; they just HAD to attempt to dip their fingers into creating an interactive media project, i.e., create a video game.  A dedicated group of Netflix employees used some of their time to building this fun little projects, like the “The Swtich” (NOT THIS ONE) — a button that can automatically dims the lights, turns on your phone’s Do Not Disturb feature for long episodes of binge-streaming — but this one’s all about gaming. The game is called Netflix Infinite Runner, which is exactly as it sounds, is an endless running game that features the most popular characters from four popular Netflix original shows: Narcos, Marco Polo, Orange is the New Black and Stranger Things. Four Long Last ‘Kirby’ Games Found At A Japanese Auction

Image result for Kirby’s Toy Box

Howdy Maiya; you should enjoy this…

Four lost Kirby minigames from the Super Famicom’s Satellaview peripheral (we’ll get to that in a bit…) have made their way into the hands of gaming preservationists after a surprise auction and some help from fans of the franchise.  Here’s the story: Kirby no Omocha Hako (「カービィのおもちゃ箱, aka “Kirby’s Toy Box”) was a Satellaview title consisting of 10 mini-games. The Japan-exclusive device let players download games via a satellite connection, and while many games were made available for the Satellaview, most have been lost after the service discontinued. However, when some ARE found, they can take quite a while to get them working and playable again. Continue reading “Four Long Last ‘Kirby’ Games Found At A Japanese Auction”

Could the ZX Spectrum return as a Handheld Games Console?

A little over a year ago, The PractitioNERD covered a project from Retro Computers pitching a new version of the classic ZX Spectrum on Indiegogo as a console/controller hybrid where you could play 1,000+ games on a TV. Now, the startup has returned with the Vega+, a portable successor that swaps the Spectrum’s classic aesthetics for a sleeker, modern and portable package. The system’s extensive library remains, only now you can play those classics on the go. Continue reading “Could the ZX Spectrum return as a Handheld Games Console?”

At One Time, You Could Play These Classic Games in Twitter; YES, You Heard That Right…

Nope, I am NOT pulling your leg, joshing you nor fooling you. Before Twitter decided to play the role of Sir Buzz Killington, you could have headed straight to Twitter, and try to run through the original Prince of Persia and other MS-DOS games like the good ol’ days of PC gaming! But hey, you can still play these awesome classics over (like Maniac Mansion, … Continue reading At One Time, You Could Play These Classic Games in Twitter; YES, You Heard That Right…

Netflix stuffs its Video Service into an NES cartridge, Because Why Not?

Netflix engineers' DarNES project

Netflix (you know, that thing you use to watch House of Cards) holds an event called Hack Days, which often showcases some wonderful and off-the-wall experiments and projects, but I think this latest project TOTALLY takes the cake, the whole cake, and NOTHING BUT the cake! Engineers Guy Cirino, Carenina Motion and Alex Wolfe have created DarNES, a hack that turns the original Nintendo Entertainment System into a Netflix playback machine. I’ll just let that soak in for a minute…..The retro-gaming console from the mid-1980s remains unchanged, as the true secret lies inside a special 256KB cartridge. While you probably don’t want to watch a blocky, 8-bit graphic marathon of Arrested Development or Orange is the New Black, it’s still pretty cool to know that you could if you really wanted to.
